Who handles your data

Memish is published by GBEC, LLC, and that company is responsible for everything described on this page.

Every meme goes through an automated safety check

Memish is made of what people upload, so nothing gets in unlooked-at. The moment a meme enters the app — the one you just built in the editor, or the GIF you just picked from GIPHY — it is sent to OpenAI’s moderation service to be screened. It goes again when you post one with a vibe tag, because that wording is new.

What leaves Memish is the meme. A meme you made or uploaded is sent as the image file itself, read out of our storage. A GIPHY pick is sent as GIPHY’s own link to it. The title and the vibe tag ride along, because a caption can break the rules as easily as a picture can.

What does not leave is you. Not your name, not your handle, not your phone number, not who you were about to send it to. OpenAI is handed a picture and a caption, not a person.

A meme the check flags stays yours alone: it never goes public, and it cannot be sent into a chat, saved by anyone else or reacted to. If the check cannot run at all — no key, or the service is down — the meme still does not go public. It waits for a check that works.

This one is not a setting. Every meme takes this route, including the ones you only ever send to one friend, and there is no way to turn it off.

What Memish keeps about you

• Your phone number, held by Clerk, the service that signs you in. Memish’s own database does not store it.
• A one-way hash of your phone number, so friends can find you without us keeping the number itself.
• Your handle, display name, and your profile photo if you pick one.
• When you were last active, so a chat can say a memer was around a moment ago.
• When you agreed to the terms and this policy — the date and time, so we can show that you did.
• The memes you upload or send, plus their titles, your vibe tag, and the tags our tagger adds.
• The safety check’s verdict on each of your memes, when it landed, and the reason if one was flagged.
• Who you chat with, who you follow, who you are friends with, and who you have blocked.
• Reactions, unread and read state, and any reports you file.
• If an account is suspended: when that happened, and a private note about why. The note is for us, and no memer is shown it.
• A line per AI tagging call your account makes — the kind of call, which meme it was for, and when. It is a spend ledger that caps how many you can run in an hour, and lines are dropped once they age out.
• Your device’s notification token, if you switch notifications on, so we know where to send them. Switch them off or sign out and it goes.
• Whether Memish Pro is active on your account, which plan it is, and when it runs out. Apple takes the payment, and no card details ever reach Memish.

What we do not keep

There are no text messages in Memish, so there is no message text to read, mine or hand over. The whole conversation is memes.

We do not sell your data, and we do not run ads against it.

Finding friends from contacts

If you allow contacts, the names and numbers you approve are sent to our server, hashed there with a secret key, and compared against the hashes of memers who already signed up. Matches come back; the numbers and the address book are not stored.

Say no and Memish still works — you can add anyone by handle or by sharing your invite link.

The search tagger

Separately from the safety check, posting a meme sends its title and the vibe tag you typed to OpenAI, which sends back a few search words so other memers can find it by vibe. This one is words only — no picture — and it is best effort: if it fails, your meme posts anyway.

When you search GIFs

The GIPHY tab passes your search words to GIPHY through our server so they can answer it. What you type is the only thing GIPHY gets — not your name, not your handle, not who you were about to send the GIF to.

Picking one is a different step, and something does leave. A GIF you pick becomes a meme of yours, so it takes the same route as everything else here: GIPHY’s own link to it, and its title, go to OpenAI for the safety check described above. Scrolling the tab and typing in it send nothing to OpenAI — choosing one does.

Who else touches your data

• Clerk — phone sign-in and your session.
• Convex — the database and the file storage your memes live in.
• OpenAI — every meme, for the automated safety check: the image itself when the file is ours, GIPHY’s link to it when you picked a GIF; and meme titles and vibe tags again, for search tagging.
• GIPHY — the words you type into GIF search.
• Expo — the service that puts notifications on your phone. It gets your device token and the words in the notification, which can include another memer’s display name.
• RevenueCat — the bookkeeping behind Memish Pro. It gets your account id and Apple’s record of what you bought. Apple handles the money, and no card details reach Memish or RevenueCat.

How long we keep it

What you can see in the app — your profile, your memes, your chats and your reactions — stays while your account is open. Nothing expires on a timer.

Delete your account and what we hold about you goes with it, on the spot — see below for exactly what that takes with it and the two things it leaves behind.

Your controls

• Settings holds your privacy switches: keep new memes private by default, and turn read receipts off.
• Block anyone, from their profile or from a meme they sent. Blocking kills the thread both ways.
• Report a meme or a memer and a human reads it. The automated check catches what it can; people handle the rest.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to see, correct, export or object to what we hold about you. Ask at contact@memish.app and we do it by hand — there is no self-serve button for it yet.

We will not make you jump through hoops for it, and we will not charge you for asking.

Deleting your account

Settings → delete account erases it for good: your profile and photo, your memes and the files behind them, the memes you sent, your reactions, your friends, follows and blocks, your saves and your notifications. It happens on the spot and there is no undo.

Two things outlive it, on purpose. A chat other memers are still in stays for them. A report someone filed about you stays as their safety record, with the parts naming you cleared.

Children

Memish is for people 13 and over. We do not knowingly keep data about anyone younger; tell us and we delete the account.
