Who handles your data

Memish is published by GBEC, LLC, and that company is responsible for everything described on this page.

Every meme goes through an automated safety check

Memish is made of what people upload, so nothing gets in unlooked-at. The moment a meme enters the app — the one you just built in the editor, or the GIF you just picked from GIPHY — it is sent to OpenAI’s moderation service to be screened. It goes again when you post one with a vibe tag, because that wording is new.

What leaves Memish is the meme. A meme you made or uploaded is sent as the image file itself, read out of our storage. A GIPHY pick sent unchanged is sent as GIPHY’s own link; if you add text or stickers in the meme maker, the finished GIF is stored by Memish and that file is sent instead. The title and the vibe tag ride along, because a caption can break the rules as easily as a picture can.

What does not leave is you. Not your name, not your handle, not your phone number, not who you were about to send it to. OpenAI is handed a picture and a caption, not a person.

A meme the check flags stays yours alone: it never goes public, and it cannot be sent into a chat, saved by anyone else or reacted to. If the check cannot run at all — no key, or the service is down — the meme still does not go public. It waits for a check that works.

This one is not a setting. Every meme takes this route, including the ones you only ever send to one friend, and there is no way to turn it off.

AI edit sends your photo to OpenAI

AI edit is optional and only runs when you ask for it. When you use it on a photo from your library or your camera, that photo and the words you typed (or the style you tapped) are sent to OpenAI’s image model, which sends back the edited picture. Before the photo leaves, Memish strips its hidden details, such as where it was taken.

To check that no writing was added, the photo and the edited picture are then shown together to a second OpenAI model. The request that makes the picture carries a scrambled code made from your account, so OpenAI can spot abuse without learning who you are — not your name, your handle or your phone number. OpenAI’s own safety system can refuse a request.

We use the photo for your edit and nothing else. It is deleted from our servers as soon as the edit is done, whether it worked, failed or you canceled it, and the edited picture within 24 hours. If you keep the result, it becomes part of your meme and goes through the safety check like every other one.

Caption ideas sends your topic to OpenAI

Caption ideas is optional and only runs when you ask it for ideas on a template. It sends the topic you typed, if you typed one, to OpenAI’s text model, with the template’s name and Memish’s own short description of it — or, for a template a memer uploaded, just its title. The model sends back a few captions to try.

That is all that goes. Caption ideas only works on templates, so it never sends your photo. It does not send your chats, your name or your handle, who you are sending to, or captions you already wrote. Whatever you type as the topic does go, so keep other people’s private details out of it. The request carries a scrambled code made from your account, so OpenAI can spot abuse without learning who you are.

Your topic goes through OpenAI’s moderation service first, and if it is flagged, nothing more is sent. The ideas go through it too before you see them, and any it flags are dropped. We do not keep your topic or the ideas — only a count of your recent requests, which caps how often you can ask. If you report an idea, we keep it and your topic with the report. An idea you use becomes part of your meme and goes through the safety check like every other one.

What Memish keeps about you

• Your phone number, held by Clerk, the service that signs you in. Memish’s own database does not store it.
• A one-way hash of your phone number, so friends can find you without us keeping the number itself.
• Your handle, display name, and your profile photo if you pick one.
• When you were last active, so a chat can say a memer was around a moment ago.
• When you agreed to the terms and this policy — the date and time, so we can show that you did.
• The memes you upload or send, plus their titles, your vibe tag, and the tags our tagger adds.
• Meme-send diagnostics, including upload timing and size, app version, platform, network type when available, retries, and failure reasons. These records help us deliver memes reliably and diagnose problems.
• The safety check’s verdict on each of your memes, when it landed, and the reason if one was flagged.
• Who you chat with, who you follow, who you are friends with, and who you have blocked.
• Reactions, unread and read state, and any reports you file. A report on a caption idea keeps the idea, your topic and the template’s name. A report on an AI edit keeps the words you typed and which model ran it — not the picture.
• If an account is suspended: when that happened, and a private note about why. The note is for us, and no memer is shown it.
• A line per AI tagging call your account makes — the kind of call, which meme it was for, and when. It is a spend ledger that caps how many you can run in an hour, and lines are dropped once they age out.
• For 24 hours after you use AI edit: the words you typed, the edited picture, and whether it worked. The photo you sent is deleted as soon as the edit is done. If you report the result, your words stay with the report.
• A count of how many times you asked for caption ideas recently, so we can cap how often you ask. Your topics and the ideas are not kept, unless you report one.
• Your device’s notification token, if you switch notifications on, so we know where to send them. Switch them off or sign out and it goes.
• Whether Memish Pro is active on your account, which plan it is, and when it runs out. The App Store or Google Play takes the payment, and no card details ever reach Memish.

What we do not keep

There are no text messages in Memish, so there is no message text to read, mine or hand over. The whole conversation is memes.

We do not sell your data, and we do not run ads against it.

Finding friends from contacts

If you allow contacts, the names and numbers you approve are sent to our server, hashed there with a secret key, and compared against the hashes of memers who already signed up. Matches come back; the numbers and the address book are not stored.

Say no and Memish still works — you can add anyone by handle or by sharing your invite link.

The search tagger

Separately from the safety check, posting a meme sends its title and the vibe tag you typed to OpenAI, which sends back a few search words so other memers can find it by vibe. This one is words only — no picture — and it is best effort: if it fails, your meme posts anyway.

When you search GIFs

The GIPHY tab passes your search words to GIPHY through our server so they can answer it. What you type is the only thing GIPHY gets — not your name, not your handle, not who you were about to send the GIF to.

Picking one is a different step, and something does leave. A GIF sent unchanged goes to the safety check by GIPHY’s own link. If you edit it in the meme maker, Memish fetches the GIPHY animation, combines it with your text or stickers, stores the finished GIF, and sends that file and its title to the safety check described above. Scrolling the tab and typing in it send nothing to OpenAI — choosing one does.

Who else touches your data

• Clerk — phone sign-in and your session. Its session records include your IP address, device or browser information, and approximate city and country derived from your IP address, to manage and protect your account.
• Convex — the database and the file storage your memes live in.
• OpenAI — every meme, for the automated safety check: the image itself when the file is ours, including a GIPHY animation you edited; GIPHY’s link when you send a pick unchanged; meme titles and vibe tags again, for search tagging; only when you use AI edit, the photo you chose and the words you typed, to make the edited picture; and, only when you use caption ideas, the topic you typed and the template’s name and description, to write the ideas and screen them.
• GIPHY — the words you type into GIF search.
• Expo — the service that puts notifications on your phone. It gets your device token and the words in the notification, which can include another memer’s display name.
• Firebase Cloud Messaging — delivers Android notifications for Expo. It uses an identifier for your app installation, app and SDK version information, and notification tokens to route messages. Notification contents can include another memer’s display name. We do not enable Google Analytics.
• RevenueCat — the bookkeeping behind Memish Pro. It gets your account id and the App Store’s or Google Play’s record of what you bought. Your store handles the money, and no card details reach Memish or RevenueCat.

How long we keep it

What you can see in the app — your profile, your memes, your chats and your reactions — stays while your account is open. Nothing expires on a timer except AI edit: the photo you send is deleted when the edit is done, and the edited picture within 24 hours.

Delete your account and what we hold about you goes with it, on the spot — see below for exactly what that takes with it and the two things it leaves behind.

Your controls

• Settings holds your privacy switches: keep new memes private by default, and turn read receipts off.
• Settings → AI features shows whether you have said OK to AI edit and to caption ideas on this phone, and lets you turn either one off. Memish then asks again before either one sends anything. It cannot recall what was already sent.
• Block anyone, from their profile or from a meme they sent. Blocking kills the thread both ways.
• Report a meme or a memer and a human reads it. The automated check catches what it can; people handle the rest.
• Report an AI edit or a caption idea right where it appears — tap Report on the result, or touch and hold the idea — and a person reads it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to see, correct, export or object to what we hold about you. Ask at contact@memish.app and we do it by hand — there is no self-serve button for it yet.

We will not make you jump through hoops for it, and we will not charge you for asking.

Deleting your account

Settings → delete account erases it for good: your profile and photo, your memes and the files behind them, the memes you sent, your reactions, your friends, follows and blocks, your saves, your notifications, the reports you filed and any AI edits still on our servers. It happens on the spot and there is no undo.

Two things outlive it, on purpose. A chat other memers are still in stays for them. A report someone filed about you stays as their safety record, with the parts naming you cleared.

Children

Memish is for people 13 and over. We do not knowingly keep data about anyone younger; tell us and we delete the account.
